Wardrobe

One of the hardest things about preparing for a photo session is deciding what everyone is going to wear!  You want to coordinate in a fashionable, classy way, but don't want to overdo it.  Here are a few suggestions to help you the next time you plan for a photo session.

Things to Avoid:
~Solid Whites~ White reacts very strongly to natural light – it tends to lose all detail and it overexposes very easily. You can definitely layer a white shirt under a sweater, or pair a soft white dress with a cardigan though!
~Matchy-Matchy~ For artistic, on-location photography, it’s better if people aren’t wearing matching outfits. Coordinating their clothes is wonderful, but try to avoid running out to the store and buying everybody the same thing.
~ Pale Colors~ For the most part, pale colors tend to lend a flatness to images. A pale pink dress looks great with bright accessories, such as headbands, scarves, colorful tights or shoes. Try to avoid dressing your little girl in pale pink from head to foot, or your baby boy in a pale blue romper.

Things you can do:
~Color, Color, Color~ The more color the better for your photographs, especially on kids. Don’t be afraid to mix and experiment with color!
~Texture~ Texture in your clothes is another detail that really makes your pictures seem layered, as opposed to flat. Pleats, ruffles, layers – all add layers to your clothing. Cardigans over camisoles, a sweater over a button-up shirt, tights with ruffled skirts and a cute hoodie on little girls, a vintage t-shirt with a little blazer over it on little boys – all are great ways to add layers and textures!
~Accessories~ Great way to add pop and texture to your photographs.  Scarves, hats, cool belts, bowties – all great details that will really pop in your images.

I love  how the couple in the photograph below coordinated their colors but didn't overdue it.  She added layers with her blouse and cardigan, and his shirt is crisp and neat with clean lines that aren't too busy.  (Beautiful pic Mom and Dad!)  Keep in mind however, that you should wear what you want to wear.  It's your photos and I want you to be happy.  So wear what you are comfortable in. These are just tips and suggestions!
